来自梵语Simhapuram，狮子城，来自simhah，狮子，词源同Sinhalese,puram，城市，词源同polis,police,policy.新加坡的别称是“狮城”，其英文名Singapore来自梵语，由simhah(狮子）和puram(城堡、城市）组成，字面意思就是“狮城”。据马来史籍记载，公元1150年左右，苏门答腊的室利佛逝王国王子为了寻找理想地点建立新城而来到此岛，见到一头从未见过的猛兽经过。王子问当地人是什么动物。当地人随口说是狮子。王子十分高兴，认为这里是吉祥之地，便决定在此建都，并取名“狮城”。
