用以表示“花色肉冻”的aspic一词据认为得名于古埃及女王克娄巴特拉（Cleopatra，69-30BC）自杀所用的名为asp（拉丁语作aspis）的一种小毒蛇。aspic是在18世纪后毕期直接借自法语的，在法语中原义为“角蝰”，相当于英语的asp。18和19世纪法国美食家说，花色肉冻和这种小毒蛇一样有冰凉感，且颜色也颇为相似，故以aspic为名。
