英语单词coroner最早是英国诺曼王朝时设置的一个王室职务,相当于国王的司法官,由各地的骑士担任。1194年的英国《巡回法院规章》(Articles of Eyre)第20条首次予以明确规定,其职责是“custos placitorum coronae”(拉丁语,=keep the pleas of the Crown,掌管国王的诉讼)。其中,coronae来自corona(crown,王冠),英语单词coroner即来源于此。
