- socks，stocking
这两个词都指“袜子”。它们的区别在于：socks一般指高及脚踝或小腿部的短袜,多为男人及儿童、运动员等穿着; 而stockings多指妇女穿的长袜,一般高及或超过膝盖。例如:
In the show-case of the new department store we saw many excellent nylon stockings manufactured in our country.我们在新开的百货公司的陈列柜里看到很多国产的优质的尼龙袜。
A lady's stockings cover the whole of her legs and feet.女人的长袜遮盖着整个腿和脚。

socks指长不到膝的短统袜子。
stocking指长到膝或过膝的长袜，常用复数形式。
