来自拉丁语Roma，罗马，词源不详。一种说法是来自Romulus，传说中古罗马人祖先，但是也有学者指出该名字本身衍生自Roma.另也有说法认为该词来自Rumon，穿罗马城而过的Tiber河的古名，来自希腊语rheo，流动，河流，词源同rheum，stream.
