Methods On 60 sides adult temporal bone specimens, the related anatomic structures were well exposed by opening the mastoid cavity and removing the lateral wall of external auditory canal and tympanic scutum.

Results: Scutum erosion were found in 12 of 14 cholesteatoma, 8 of them accompanied with erosion of attic lateral wall.

Conclusion: The destruction of scutum with erosion of attic lateral wall is a feature for cholesteatoma of middle ear.
