8世纪时，信奉伊斯兰教的阿拉伯帝国大肆扩张，沿着北非一路向西发展，从西班牙入侵欧洲大陆。被法兰克王国的铁锤查理击败后，阿拉伯人退回西班牙，统治了西班牙近800年。期间，西班牙的基督教徒要么被迫改信伊斯兰教，要么逃亡至西班牙北部边境的山区。那些放弃基督教信仰，改信伊斯兰教的基督教徒被北方基督教徒视为叛徒，称为renegado（叛教者）。这个西班牙单词来自拉丁语renegatus，是动词renegare（deny，否认）的名词形式。英语单词renegade就来自西班牙语renegado，与它同源的有renege。
