celebrate着重指外表或行动上的欢庆,如举行盛会、张灯结彩等; 而commemorate着重唤起对某一事件的记忆,该事件不一定是使人欢庆的。例如:
They had a party to celebrate their silver wedding.他们举行聚会来庆祝他们的银婚。
This building was built to commemorate the Fire of London.这栋大楼是为纪念“伦敦大火”而兴建的。
这两个词都有“庆贺”的意思。它们的区别在于:celebrate只能以事或物作宾语; 而congratulate后面只能以“被庆贺的人”作宾语。例如:
We celebrated his birthday by a banquet.我们举行宴会庆祝他的生日。
We congratulated her on having passed the examinations.我们祝贺她通过了考试。
这两个动词均有“庆祝，祝贺”之意。
celebrate通常指举行盛大隆重的仪式庆祝或纪念有意义的日子或某件事情，多暗示节日般的欢乐场面。
congratulate指对他人祝贺为目的，希望他人幸福或走运。

来自拉丁词celeber，拥挤的，出名的。可能最终来自PIE*sker，转，围，词源同ring,crowd.即围起来的一群人。它原本是一个宗教术语，指很多人聚集到一起敬拜神灵，通常为了庆祝神灵的生日。后来其宗教色彩逐渐淡化，可用来表示庆祝任何一件事。但在其衍生词celebrated中，它应该取其原意“很多人提及和赞美”，所以是“有名的”，而不是“被庆祝的”。同样，celebrity指的是“有名的人”，而不是“被庆祝的人”。

celebrate的基本意思是指由于宗教、政治或其他有意义的原因而举行的“庆祝”或“纪念”(唱歌、跳舞、设宴或发表讲话等)，着重外在的或行动上的欢乐和喜庆，可引申作“颂扬，赞美”解。
celebrate多用作及物动词，跟节日、胜利、成功或类似性质的词作宾语，不可以接人，也不可接that从句。
